Peer‑Led Community Engagement in Action
At the heart of this initiative are structured peer‑to‑peer discussion sessions conducted at Adisalem Primary Hospital, Dagmawi Menelik Health Center, and Bahir Dar Health Center under the Bahir Dar City Administration.
These safe, inclusive spaces empower TB survivors and patients through:

The peer‑led sessions aim to:
Reduce TB‑related stigma and misinformation
Improve treatment adherence and completion rates
Promote early detection and timely access to care
Strengthen survivor‑led advocacy and peer support networks
Build community trust and ownership in the TB response

Peer support is redefining TB care globally—extending beyond psychosocial and mental health support to include:
Community accountability
Participatory monitoring
Delivery of truly people‑centred services
By providing consistent support for peer‑to‑peer sessions, trained counsellors and TB survivors can conduct regular, structured, and high‑quality counselling activities at health facilities and within communities.
These sessions create safe spaces for patients to share experiences, receive accurate information, and gain emotional support. As a result, the program strengthens timely linkage to care, improves treatment adherence, reduces interruptions, and achieves higher success rates for both Drug‑Sensitive TB (DS‑TB) and Drug‑Resistant TB (DR‑TB) patients.

This initiative demonstrates that communities are not just beneficiaries of the TB response they are leaders and drivers of change. By empowering survivors to guide others, we are building a stronger, more resilient fight against TB in Bahir Dar and beyond.
